Self employment is an under used option by individuals with disabilities to develop income and be self supporting. Self employment may provide the flexibility needed to manage oneís disability while generating an income. The NEBA program is free to qualified individuals through the Social Security Administrationís Ticket to Work program. Other individuals can participate in the business development program with a modest fee or as a Vocational Rehab referral.

NEBAís Business Development Center (BDC) provides an innovative approach to assisting individuals with disabilities and/or employment barriers in starting their own business. Participants receive the necessary entrepreneurial training to write a valid business plan and ongoing business implementation support once the plan is completed.

The BDC program includes networking with the Small Business Administrationís SCORE program and other BDC entrepreneurs across the country. This networking support increases possible business success from 30% to 80%, as identified by SBA data.

Individuals participating in the BDC program do so on a weekly, one-on one basis, face to face or by phone. Program participants can reside anywhere in the United States and must have access to a computer with Microsoft office (Word and Excel)and have a personal email address.

The individualized business plan includes:

* Three year projection of business operating costs and revenue

* Marketing plan to position product/service in appropriate markets

Once the plan is completed the participant can obtain business implementation support in sales and client development specific to the business.
